Burglary

Mr Freeman was feeling quite cheerful as he went to open (1) his shop, but that soon changed. As he put his key in the door he realized that something was wrong. The door was open. He immediately realized that his shop was broken (2) . Although the shop had an alarm system, it had not done any good as the burglar had switched it (3) . Furthermore, the burglar had cut (4) the phone and so Mr Freeman had to walk a long way down the street to a public phone in order to send (5) the police. It was quite early in the morning and he did not want to disturb the people in the neighbouring house.
The police arrived (6) the shop shortly after the shopkeeper returned. They examined the shop to look for fingerprints and other clues. Meanwhile, they asked Mr Freeman to see if there was any money missing from the till and to write (7) a list of items that had been stolen. The burglar had smashed several of the glass shelves and had broken a window but the police advised Mr Freeman not to sweep (8) the broken glass until they had finished investigations.
By the time the shopkeeper had carried (9) his instructions the police had done all they could and left. Mrs Freeman arrived just then saying, “Thank goodness the burglar did not beat you (10) !”
